As you may recall, I was unable to turn off my parental controls that I had previously enabled, as that was previously the only way to disable Real ID when it was first implemented.
I contacted customer service and got a vague response about a Parental Controls FAQ, so I repeated my problem with screenshots. And here is the response:
I do understand the situation. However, once the Parental Controls have been activated, there is no way to deactivate or turn them back off. The email address that you contacted me at is the email address registered to your Parental Controls, so you should be able to log into through the Parental Controls set up, in order to enable the settings for Real ID.
That’s right, once you have Parental Controls enabled, you can never turn them off. You can turn off all the “kiddie control” features so that you can access everything the same as an adult, but once Parental Controls are enabled, there’s no going back. And since Parental Controls are active on my account (forever and ever) that is the only way I can tweak my Real ID settings forever and ever.
In a sick twist of fate, it is less secure for me to tweak Real ID settings via Parental Controls than to do it the “adult” way. You see, to access Real ID settings for adults the “normal” way, you must login to battle.net with your username, password, and, if applicable, authenticator code. To change Real ID settings via Parental Controls, I simply click a link in an e-mail they sent me and I’m in the parental control interface. No username, password, or authenticator required. Epic. Fail.
